What is the Bermuda Triangle?

Bermuda Triangle Facts
Pictorial representation of Bermuda Triangle

Bermuda Triangle is a specific region in the western part of North Atlantic Ocean. It is not a properly defined territory. The triangle lies roughly between Bermuda, Puerto Rico and Miami. Although many reporters and authors have demarcated the area according to their will, the U.S. Board of Geographic Names does not recognize the name of the region as ‘Bermuda Triangle.’

Bermuda Triangle facts or stories?

According to reports, ships, planes and people travelling over the Bermuda Triangle region vanish into thin air! Stories about the mysterious disappearances started surfacing in the 1950s. Loss of Flight 19 operated by the United States Navy was the first major event that triggered the later stories. Flight 19 was on a training mission when it lost all contacts with land. Till date, no wreckage of the flight has been found.

Following this, there were other stories about the incidents in the area. Ships were found adrift in the ocean. The crew were missing, and no one ever heard from them. Several ships disappeared without any distress signals. As the mystery surrounding the region gathered attention, the number of reported disappearances also grew.

Myths about the mystery

Vincent Gaddis was the author who first used the phrase ‘Bermuda Triangle,’ in his article. He put forward many explanations for the strange occurrences, all of which pointed towards paranormal activities. Later authors also contributed to these theories. Several explanations suggested for the mysterious disappearances are as follows:

  • Some theorists attributed the disappearance to the presence of UFOs. Aliens allegedly capture the ships and planes entering the territory, for their studies.
  • The lost mythical continent, Atlantis, is another explanation given for Bermuda Triangle occurrences. Fire-crystals emerge from this lost continent, and as a result, ships and planes get sucked up into the ocean. The area is supposedly a vortex that takes objects to other dimensions.
  • Mythological and superstitious beliefs have also contributed their share to the mysteries. There were stories of sea monsters or ghostly figures attacking the ships in this region.

Probable explanations

Through years of research, scientists have been able to clear the mystery around Bermuda Triangle to a great extent. Let us have a look at their contentions.

  • There is no evidence to show that the rate of disappearances in this region is higher than that in any other region in oceans. Several reports provided highly exaggerated data that lacked proper research.
  • The region of the Bermuda Triangle is prone to cyclones and hurricanes. This could be the reason for unexplained vanishings. A combination of bad weather and human errors can contribute to accidents.
  • Bermuda Triangle region witnesses heavy air and water traffic. Where traffic is more, chances of accidents are also more.

So we have to understand that there are no supernatural elements prying on humans from the depths of the ocean. Human imagination is boundless. As a result, the stories surrounding the Bermuda Triangle have turned colorful.
